Study to solve flood woes in Kedah

ALOR SETAR: The Kedah Drainage and Irrigation Department has appointed a consultant for a flood mitigation study in the state, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.


He said the study would be to find ways to reduce floods in the long term.

He also said the Government was ready to face a second wave of floods as heavy rains are expected in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang beginning Sunday until next Thursday.

“Although we hope the second wave will not happen, we have made preparations including logistics, safety, relief centre locations and evacuation procedures,” Muhyiddin said after visiting a flood evacuation centre at SK Gunung here yesterday.

A total of 596 people are staying at the centre. Until noon yesterday, 882 people were still staying in three evacuation centres in the Kota Setar district.

Muhyiddin, together with Kedah Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal and Deputy Agriculture Minister Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum, rode on motorcycles to have a closer look at the flood-hit villages.

They were taken through Kampung Alor Gunung, Kampung Gunung Keriang and Kampung Alor Senjaya.
